Makalu
The Great Black
One year after reaching the summit of the world, Edurne set her sights on climbing Makalu, a giant at 8,463 metres on the frontier between Tibet and Nepal. Known as the Great Black, it is just 22 kilometres from Everest and is of great technical difficulty.

The Great Black, as it is known, is the fifth highest mountain in the world. Makalu (in official Chinese Makaru; Pinyin: Mǎkǎlǔ Shān) is one of the 14 mountains of over 8,000 metres.

It is located in the Himalayas on the frontier between Nepal and Tibet. Makalu is 22 km to the east of Mount Everest.

Makalu has two considerable subsidiary peaks. Kangchungtse, or Makalu II, 7,678 metres above sea level, 3 km to the North West. Climbing 4 km to the North West over a plateau, and connected to Kangchungtse by means of a narrow path, is Chomo Lonzo at 7,818 m.
